Hello February!

Hello!!
Can you believe that in approximately 8 mins (of my writing this) it will be February. Quick spell check close your eyes and spell February - I failed when i typed it first (makes mental note to add it to my students' spelling drill *evil girn*).

The year got off to a rocky start but I'm thankful for new chances, life and love.
I'm also thankful for new challenges, with that I introduce... *drumroll please*

FAB- AB FEBRUARY!!!!

I know awesome right???
If you're thinking, oh I need more time to think about it, why didn't you post earlier- all I hear are excuses! Just do it will be fun!
Please watch the embedded videos as it would be useless to do this in improper form. Suffer head for nothing.

I hope you'll join me in the challenge! I'm making the photo my desktop wallpaper, please leave a comment below if you will!

Cheers to a great month!

Calabar- The carnival

So I had been wanting to go to Calabar for a little over 2years now and at the end of last year made it a reality, On December 26th 2011 I boarded a plane to Port harcourt to meet up with my friends, after many flight delays I finally made it in.

Because of my flight delay, we had missed our planned ride to Calabar and had to find alternative means . Since we already had hotel reservations, We had to take a rickety bus to make it in that day- my friends were not in least bit amused, I on the other hand was ecstatic! Adventure!

So we got in our rickety bus and embarked on the four hour journey, music laughter and good company, it wasn't really that bad, until about 45mins to Calabar our bus had a punctured tire. It was a bit alarming, thankfully there was a spare and about 30mins later we were back on the road.

By the time we got to our hotel we were dead tired and didn't go out that evening. So these are from the next day.
I'll stop rambling and get to the photos!

Calabar is really pretty! and serene. Made me resent Lagos.

Getting in the carnival mood we got our faces painted on a whim :)

I have a lot more carnival photos but can't get them off my phone :(. I was really impressed by the creativity of the costumes, I had expected a tacky mess (some still were) but most were awesome. Really beautiful! and soooo organized!

Eneni finally made it in :D. Our new friend Nnamdi in the bottom right corner! It was such a pleasure to meet him :).

Mnena and Sopi disappeared at some point! Turns out they had the time of their lives on exciting power-bike rides. hmph! :p

Party time!! The club was so much unexpected fun, dancing, laughing, more dancing, drinks. ahhhh. If every clubbing experience was like this I'd go out more often.

Day 2- Calabar. Epic

Look out for the next post

Till next time,
Sabirah.

Thursday Tidbits

Hello! Happy Thursday!

  1. I didn't do anything today. I just walked around in a tee and boy-shorts, ate and slept. It felt awesome.
  2. I miss baking! Need to fix the oven!! I need to cook more!
  3. The partner and I are starting the insanity workout program, I think on monday, I'm not gonna lie I'm scared but I'm glad I have a partner. We are trying to be toned although he has a pretty great body.
  4. I love my new teaching Job.
  5. But we have a dress code, no pants! can you believe that :( and a color code too! Monday- white, Tuesday-blue, Thursday- Lilac. The rest are free days. This means i have to buy new clothes. Shopping in Lagos on a limited budget is tedious.
  6. I want an iPhone, cos i think instagram is cool, but it's like number 456 on my want list
  7. I'm excited about valentines day! :D did I say this in my last post?
  8. The partner has been gone for 4 days. I miss him terribly :(
  9. He comes back tonight ^_^

This Teaching thing...

Happy Sunday everyone!

Hope you've had a great weekend! I had a really fun time this weekend, I went to a live recording of Nigerian Idol to support my friend Diwari, PLS SEND 526 to 33680 if you're in Nigeria, she's really good! voting closes on Wednesday. Thank you :)

I also went to a birthday party my sister-friend/better half/best-friend threw for her boyfriend, spent most of the day helping her in the kitchen and getting ready (i'll probably do a post if I can get the photos) met some amazing people and had a great time. The partner and I have the perfect "we came together but we can mingle too" thing going on. It was such a big success! Well done Khaf!

So now to the actual post, Lots of people have asked how I got into teaching, what it's been like etc so hopefully I can answer all those questions here.

I've kinda always known that at some point in my life I would teach, at first, when I was on my PhD track, it was higher education that I was interested in teaching but I didn't know it would be so soon. When I made the decision to come back to Nigeria after college I knew that I didn't want to work in a bank or anything like that. I thought about my experiences, my strengths and how I could give back and of course teaching came up again. Being a teacher is such a creative environment which is exactly the type I thrive in.

I remember the first month of my arrival in Lagos I told everyone upon meeting them "Hey I want to be a teacher, if you know someone hiring let me know" It was my opening sentence to every interaction. Sure enough it paid off, about three different people contacted me about different opportunities. Since I
hadn't started my NYSC, I decided it would be best if I just volunteered for a bit. At least to see if I would enjoy it as much as I thought I would.

Thankful for my friend Ore who told me about Maroko high school and how they desperately needed some help with their SS3 class who were very far behind. Their exams were coming up and their teachers were over worked and spread thin. I really didn't understand the gravity of the situation till I took my first set of essays. I was almost discouraged, but I graded slowly and carefully leaving half a page worth of comments for each one.

It was worth it! My students are very eager to learn, sometimes restless and rowdy like teenagers can be but still eager to learn, show off their knowledge and then acquire some more. I haven't really had any disciplinary issues save for the boys in the back, all I had to do was split them up and then have a one-on-one meeting with them later. Maybe because my students are in SS3 they are more mature or maybe they just appreciate my being there but they are generally well behaved.

I haven't had any drama with the other teachers since i'm not full on staff, apart from an awkward moment when there was a teacher in the class during my period. Teaching is exhausting, physically and mentally. From preparing my lesson plan, to speaking loudly to a class of 75 students, to standing for hours in a room without a fan. But it is oh-so-rewarding, I really can't explain the feeling, when my students correct their own mistakes and see their improvement. It's all the payment I need.

Unfortunately my student's pride in themselves won't pay the bills so I had to start looking for a more permanent teaching job that actually pays. By word of mouth again I got called (thanks Khaf!). I had an interview at a private school last week Thursday, it went great and on Tuesday I'm going to sit in on a couple of classes. I'm excited! Wish me luck.

If you're interested in teaching in Nigeria, and you have time to volunteer I'll suggest going to a public school in your area and talking to the principal, they would be more than happy to have you! So that's it on my teaching experience so far, my long term goal is to go into education policy, but I need to know the system before I can fix it. I can't wait to see where this will take me.

Have a great week ahead!
Love, Sab.

Photo Friday

Hello good morning,

I'm on a roll with blogging! I think. Anyways as I said in my last post in an effort to blog more often i'll be doing mini features. This one is called "Photo Friday" (yaay clap clap clap). So on Friday's i'll post one picture most likely from my tumblr or someplace around the web, or a personal one. I might write a little blurb about the photo or a reaction, or I might say nothing at all and let it speak for itself
Hope you like it! Here goes.

Aren't these the cutest :) ?
Love and Cocoa,
Sab.

Thursday Tidbits

Hello wonderful people!
In an effort to start blogging more often i'm introducing new mini features! Today I present "Thursday tidbits"!!! <this is where you clap. yaay> It's basically going to be me just dropping little tidbits about whatever is on my mind at the moment, in a micro blogging manner kinda how twitter used to be back in the day. Here goes! Hope you like!

  1. I'm so very happy right now! I've spent the past hour dancing around the room to the amazement of my partner and friend. My Electric dance playlist is the best!
  2. I have the best partner in the world
  3. Most of my closest friends are old friends, few newbies though! shout-out to Seyi n Kech :) <3
  4. I went for the most awkward interview today. It lasted 2 hours and 20mins O_O. It went well. Got the job :D. More later
  5. I don't ever want to be a rude person, or condescending to anyone, it's such an ugly trait
  6. I'm excited about valentines day! I just love it!
  7. On Saturday i'm going to a birthday party dinner thingy, dress up and maybe subtle matchies (puke) with the partner?
  8. I'm really thankful for my naturally sunny disposition
  9. It's my momma's birthday tomorrow!!
That's it!
till next time!
Love,
Sab

Hello 2012

Happy new year,

It is with great joy that I welcome you into this wonderful year *continues with the drama*... Really though I'm glad you made it, that we made it, I hope it's a great year for all of us. The whole holiday season was really fun for me. I spent the earlier part of Christmas day with family and then later in the evening with the partner** and some mutual friends(mostly his, newly mine), which was a blast. Went to an owambe** style party, danced and had my name sung to me. It was a blast.

Random interjection, I'm really thankful for the partner, He really has a good heart, not just to me, he's an overall great person. He got me a Christmas present, well four- books (I might review them in a bit) that I absolutely loved- finished reading them all already- and the cutest card, I love cards! And what did I get him? Nothing :( I need to start earning money soon, this won't do. Anyways end of my gushing about the partner.

The day after Christmas I got on a plane to Port-harcourt to visit my close friend from high school Sopi, and her friend (now mine too) Mnenna. We all then headed to Calabar and met up with another close high school friend Eneni. Best decision Ever, Calabar was a blast. Pictures coming up in the next post. We left Calabar on the 29th, headed back to Port- Harcourt stayed for two days then headed to Opobo, Sopi's village - yes i'm a real jet (and road and sea) Setter. Can't wit to share my adventures in detail. I had the most amazing time.

Came back home with a bit of a fever and some asthma complications, but I'm very well now. Nigeria is in turmoil now, fuel subsidy has been removed and it seems to be the straw that is breaking the Camel's back. As a result there are on going protests all over the nation and a labor strike starting tomorrow. I pray for the safety of everyone and I hope that this is the beginning of a new beginning for Nigeria, It's been a long time coming.
If you're participating in any protests do stay safe.

Love,
Sabirah

The partner*- everyone asks me why that title? Well simply I've had boyfriends in the past and he doesn't quite fit the definition boyfriend and I like the sound of partner- One who shares :)

Owambe - A Nigerian party, usually a Yoruba one with lots of music, most likely a live band and heavy dancing and spraying of money. Yes they're amazing.
